What Is an Exchange Device CAL and When Is It Your Best Choice?
The Device CAL is the right choice whenever more people than devices need to access the Exchange Server.
- One device, many users: License a computer once and let all employees who use that PC have full access to the Exchange Server – perfect for shift work, computers in training rooms and call centres, or public terminals.
- Minimal cost, maximum use: This licence option is significantly more cost-effective than user-based licensing when 3 or more people share a device.
- Full functionality: Gives access to email, calendar, contacts and tasks via Outlook or the improved Outlook Web App (OWA) from the licensed device.
Flexible Licence Packs for Your Whole Infrastructure
We make licence management simple. This Device CAL is available individually and in convenient packs for 5, 10, 25 or 50 devices.
If your employees mainly work across several devices of their own (e.g. a PC and a laptop), the user-based Exchange Server 2013 User CAL may be the cheaper and more flexible alternative.

Important Licensing Information
Please note that an Exchange Server CAL is an additional licence. To use Exchange Server 2013 legally, you must have:
- A valid licence for Exchange Server 2013 Standard or Enterprise Edition.
- These Exchange Server 2013 Device CALs for every device that accesses a mailbox.
- In addition (always required for Windows Server), a Windows Server CAL for every device/user that accesses the underlying Windows Server.
Frequently asked questions
A PC in our lab is used by four researchers in turn. Which Exchange CALs do I need?
You need exactly one Exchange Server 2013 Device CAL for this one PC. Because several researchers share the PC, this is the most cost-effective solution for email access.
Can I also use these 2013 Device CALs to access an Exchange Server 2016 or later?
No. Exchange CALs are not upward compatible. An Exchange Server 2013 Device CAL only allows access to an Exchange Server 2013. For newer server versions, you need the corresponding newer CALs.
How long will Exchange Server 2013 be supported by Microsoft?
Extended support for Exchange Server 2013 ended on 11 April 2023. After this date, Microsoft no longer provides security updates or bug fixes. We therefore only recommend running it in isolated environments.
What is the difference between this Device CAL and an Exchange Server 2013 User CAL?
A Device CAL is tied to one device, which can then be used by any number of users. A User CAL is tied to one user, who can then access the server from any number of devices. The Device CAL is often the best choice when there are more users than devices to license.
