You need exactly one SQL Server 2022 Device CAL for this one PC. That is cheaper than buying three SQL User CALs. You will of course also need the SQL Server 2022 Standard (Server + CAL) licence.
Where on the server do I install this licence?
Nowhere. SQL CALs (like standard Windows Server CALs) serve solely as legal proof of entitlement. You must keep the invoice and the licence documentation as evidence. There is no technical installation or activation on the server.
What is the difference from the SQL User CAL?
A Device CAL is tied to one device, which can then be used by any number of users. A User CAL is tied to one user, who can then access the server from any number of devices. Rule of thumb: if there are more users than devices, the Device CAL is cheaper.
Do these CALs also work if I have bought the core-based licence for SQL Server?
No. If you have licensed SQL Server by cores, you need no CALs. CALs are only relevant for the "Server + CAL" licensing model.
Can we use 2022 SQL CALs to access an older SQL Server 2019 database as well?
Yes. SQL CALs are backward compatible. An SQL Server 2022 CAL can be used to access SQL Server 2022, 2019 and older versions.
