- A valid licence for Exchange Server 2019 Standard or Enterprise Edition.
- These Exchange Server 2019 Device CALs for every device that accesses a mailbox.
- In addition (always required for Windows Server), a Windows Server CAL for every device/user that accesses the underlying Windows Server.

Can I also use these 2019 Device CALs to access Exchange Server 2022 or newer?
No. Exchange CALs are not forward compatible. An Exchange Server 2019 Device CAL only allows access to Exchange Server 2019. For newer server versions such as 2022, you need the corresponding newer CALs.
When does Microsoft support for Exchange Server 2019 end?
Extended support for Exchange Server 2019 ended on 14 October 2025. Your CALs remain valid permanently, and you can still run the server.
What is the difference between this Device CAL and an Exchange Server 2019 User CAL?
A Device CAL is tied to one device, which can then be used by any number of users. A User CAL is tied to one user, who can then access the server from any number of devices. The Device CAL is often the best choice when there are more users than devices to license.
