What are the main differences between Windows Server 2022 Standard and Datacenter?
The key difference is the right to run unlimited virtual machines in the Datacenter edition (compared with just two in Standard). In addition, exclusive features for the Software-Defined Datacenter, such as Storage Spaces Direct (S2D) and Software-Defined Networking (SDN), are only included in the Datacenter edition.
How does core licensing work? Do I have to buy a separate licence for each core?
You must license all the physical CPU cores in the server. To make this easier, we offer 16-core and 24-core licence packs. You must license at least 16 cores per server. For servers with more than 16 cores, such as 24, you need the corresponding pack.
I've bought the Datacenter licence. Do I still need client access licences (CALs) for the unlimited VMs?
Yes, absolutely. The Datacenter licence only covers the operating system of the host and the VMs. For every user (User CAL) or device (Device CAL) that accesses the services of any of the VMs, you still need a separate Windows Server 2022 CAL.
Is the Datacenter edition more secure than the Standard edition?
Both editions share the same core security features, such as Secured-core Server. However, the Datacenter edition offers additional security layers aimed specifically at virtualised environments, such as the Host Guardian Service and the ability to virtualise and secure networks between VMs (SDN).
