How is Windows Server 2022 Essentials licensed? Is it core-based?
The licensing is a special case: it is not core-based like the Standard/Datacenter editions. The licence applies per physical server, but limits it to hardware with a maximum of one processor (1 CPU) and a maximum of 10 cores.
Are the simplified management features such as the "Essentials Dashboard" included again?
No. As with version 2019, the "Windows Server Essentials Experience" role has been removed. Management is done instead through the powerful, modern, browser-based Windows Admin Center.
Can I use Hyper-V to run virtual machines on the Essentials server?
No. The Essentials edition cannot be used as a Hyper-V host. This means you may not run other virtual servers on it. However, the licence does allow you to install the Essentials edition itself as one virtual machine on another host.
What happens if my business goes over the limit of 25 users?
Essentials is limited to 25 users and 50 devices. If you exceed this limit, you must migrate to Windows Server 2022 Standard, which requires a new server licence and buying CALs for all your users or devices.
