The two editions are almost identical in function. The only, but crucial, difference is the virtualisation rights. Standard allows up to 2 VMs per host licence. Datacenter allows an unlimited number of VMs per host licence and includes the Automatic Virtual Machine Activation (AVMA) feature for simpler activation.
When does the more expensive Datacenter licence pay off?
The Datacenter licence usually pays off once you plan to run more than 10-12 virtual machines on a single physical server. It makes the most of your hardware and greatly simplifies licence management, as you don't have to buy a new Standard licence for every two additional VMs.
How is Windows Server 2012 R2 licensed?
Windows Server 2012 R2 (Standard and Datacenter) is licensed based on the physical processors of the host server. One licence covers up to two physical processor sockets.
Are there still security updates for this version?
No. Microsoft's official "Extended Support" ended in October 2023. We therefore recommend using it in isolated networks protected by firewalls, especially with an edition this focused on virtualisation.
Do I need separate CALs for the virtual machines in a Datacenter environment?
Yes. The server licence (Datacenter) only covers the operating system of the host and the VMs. For every user or device that accesses one of the VMs, you still need a separate Windows Server 2012 CAL (User or Device).
