The "R2" version is a major upgrade. The main improvements are: support for generation 2 virtual machines in Hyper-V (more secure and faster), significant improvements to storage technologies (Storage Spaces with tiering) and the introduction of PowerShell v4.0 with Desired State Configuration.
Does Microsoft still provide security updates for Windows Server 2012 R2?
No. Microsoft's official "Extended Support" ended in October 2023. This means there are no more regular security updates. We therefore recommend using it in isolated networks protected by firewalls.
How many virtual machines can I run with the Standard edition?
The Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard licence entitles you to run up to two virtual machines (VMs) on the licensed physical host.
Which access licences (CALs) do I need for this version?
You need Windows Server 2012 CALs (or newer ones, e.g. 2016 or 2019, as these are backward compatible). Older CALs such as 2008 R2 are not valid for access to a 2012 R2 server.
Can I upgrade directly from an older server version to 2012 R2?
Yes, Microsoft generally supports direct "in-place" upgrades from the immediately preceding versions. Please note, however, that a clean installation is always recommended for a smooth transition, especially in production environments.
