We have 7 field staff. Which licences do we need for remote access?
You need 7 x "Microsoft Remote Desktop Services 2008 R2 User CAL". You can buy either one 5-pack and two single licences, or seven single licences. The User CAL is ideal here, as each employee uses different devices while on the move.
Can I use a 2008 R2 CAL to access Windows Server 2012 or newer?
No. The CAL version must always be the same as the server version or newer. A 2008 R2 CAL only allows access to Windows Server 2008 R2 (or older). For Server 2012, you need a CAL for version 2012 or later.
Is the licence valid indefinitely?
Yes, it is a perpetual licence that does not expire. Please bear in mind, however, that Microsoft no longer provides security updates for Windows Server 2008 R2 and that the server should be operated in a protected environment.
Do I also need to buy a regular "Windows Server User CAL" in addition to the RDS User CAL?
Yes, that is a very important point. The RDS CAL is an add-on licence. Every user who accesses the server needs TWO licences: 1. a Windows Server 2008 R2 User CAL for basic access and 2. an RDS 2008 R2 User CAL for the terminal server function.
How does this differ from a Device CAL?
A User CAL licenses one person, who may then access the server from any number of devices. A Device CAL licenses one device, which may then be used by any number of people. The User CAL is more flexible, while the Device CAL is often cheaper for businesses operating shifts.
