How does this differ from a Device CAL?
A User CAL licenses one person, who may then access the server from any number of devices. A Device CAL licenses one device, which may then be used by any number of people. The User CAL is more flexible for mobile staff, while the Device CAL is often cheaper for businesses operating shifts.
Where on the server are these licences installed?
RDS CALs are managed through the server's licensing system. You need to install the "Remote Desktop Licensing" role on a server in your network. Then enter the licence keys you received from us in "Remote Desktop Licensing Manager" to activate the licence pool.
Can I also use a 2016 CAL to access Windows Server 2019?
No. The CAL version must always be the same as the server version or newer. A 2016 CAL allows access to Server 2016 or 2012 R2, but not to Server 2019 or 2022.
Is the licence valid indefinitely?
Yes, it is a perpetual licence that does not expire and has no recurring costs.
