A kiosk PC in the foyer is used by many different guests. Which licence is right?
For this scenario, a Device CAL is the only solution that is both appropriate and cost-effective. You license the kiosk PC once with an RDS Device CAL (and a Standard Device CAL), and an unlimited number of guests may use it.
How does the system assign the licence to a device?
The assignment is handled by Remote Desktop Licensing Manager on your Windows Server. When a device that is not yet licensed connects for the first time, the licence server issues it with a temporary licence. This is later converted into a permanent RDS Device CAL and tied to the device's hardware ID.
Are these CALs compatible with Windows Server 2016 or 2022?
They are backward compatible, but not forward compatible. With an RDS 2019 Device CAL you can access Windows Server 2019 or 2016, but not the newer Windows Server 2022.
Is the licence valid indefinitely?
Yes, it is a perpetual licence that does not expire and has no recurring costs.
How does this differ from a User CAL?
A Device CAL is tied to a device, which can then be used by any number of users. A User CAL is tied to a user, who can then access the server from any number of devices. Rule of thumb: if you have more users than devices, the Device CAL is cheaper.
