- A valid licence for SQL Server 2014 Standard (Server + CAL edition).

Frequently asked questions
A PC in the workshop is used by 3 employees to access the SQL database. What do I need?
You need exactly one SQL Server 2014 Device CAL for this one PC. That is cheaper than buying three SQL User CALs. You will of course also need the SQL Server 2014 Standard (Server + CAL) licence.
Where on the server do I install this licence?
Nowhere. SQL CALs (like Standard Windows Server CALs) are purely legal proof of licensing. You must keep the invoice and the licence documentation as proof. There is no technical installation or activation on the server.
How does this differ from a SQL User CAL?
A Device CAL is tied to a device, which can then be used by any number of users. A User CAL is tied to a user, who can then access the server from any number of devices. Rule of thumb: if you have more users than devices, the Device CAL is cheaper.
Do these CALs also work if I have bought the core-based licence for SQL Server?
No. If you have licensed SQL Server per core, you need no CALs. CALs only apply to the ‘Server + CAL’ licensing model.
Can we use 2014 SQL CALs to access a SQL Server 2016 database?
No. SQL CALs (like Windows Server CALs) are not forward compatible. To access SQL Server 2016, you need at least 2016 CALs.
