A PC in the workshop is used by 3 employees to access the SQL database. What do I need?
You need exactly one SQL Server 2017 Device CAL for that one PC. This is cheaper than buying three SQL User CALs. Of course, you also need the SQL Server 2017 Standard (Server + CAL) licence.
Where on the server do I install this licence?
Nowhere. Standard CALs are legal evidence of your right to access the server. You must keep the invoice and the licence documentation as evidence. There is no technical installation or activation on the server.
How does this differ from an SQL User CAL?
A Device CAL is tied to a device, which can then be used by any number of users. A User CAL is tied to a user, who can then access the server from any number of devices. Rule of thumb: if there are more users than devices, the Device CAL is cheaper.
Do these CALs also work if I have bought the core-based licence for SQL Server?
No. If you have licensed SQL Server per core, you need no CALs. CALs are only relevant for the "Server + CAL" licensing model.
Can we use 2017 SQL CALs to access an SQL Server 2019 database?
No. SQL CALs (like Windows Server CALs) are not forward compatible. To access SQL Server 2019, you need at least 2019 CALs.
