Is this CAL also valid for Remote Desktop access (terminal server)?
No. This standard User CAL only covers basic access (e.g. file sharing). If the user also needs to access a terminal server, they additionally need an "RDS 2012 R2 User CAL".
An employee has a PC in the office and a laptop at home. How many licences do I need?
You need exactly one Windows Server 2012 R2 User CAL. This one licence covers that employee on all their devices.
Where on the server is this licence activated?
Nowhere. Standard CALs are not registered on the server itself. Your invoice and licence documents provide legal proof of licensing, which you should keep safe in case of an audit.
Can I also use a 2012 R2 CAL to access a server running Windows Server 2008 R2?
Yes, that is possible. CALs are backward compatible. A 2012 R2 CAL can be used to access Server 2012 R2, 2012, 2008 R2 and older.
Does a "User CAL" still apply when the employee leaves the company?
User CALs can be reassigned. If an employee leaves the company, you can assign their licence to a new employee. However, constant reassignment in day-to-day operations is not permitted.
