Windows Server 2019 User CAL
Description
Microsoft Windows Server 2019 User CAL: the flexible access licence for your employees
Ensure access to your modern server environment is correctly licensed with a Microsoft Windows Server 2019 User CAL. Regardless of how many cores your server has, every employee needs a Client Access Licence (CAL) to access basic services such as file shares or print servers. The User CAL is tied to a specific user and offers maximum flexibility. Buy your official perpetual licence from Vollversion-Software and ensure audit-proof licensing for every employee in your company.
What is a Windows Server User CAL?
The User CAL is the ideal choice for businesses whose employees work flexibly across several devices. The principle is "one user, many devices".
- User-based licensing: You assign the licence to an employee, not to their devices.
- Maximum flexibility: The licensed employee can access server services from all their devices – an office PC, a laptop used for working from home, a tablet or a smartphone.
- Ideal for mobile working: The perfect solution for field staff and employees who are not tied to a fixed workstation.
Licence packs for businesses of all sizes
We make licence management simpler. This User CAL is available individually and in cost-effective packs for 5, 10, 25 or 50 users.
For computers shared by people working different shifts, we recommend the device-based Windows Server 2019 Device CAL as a potentially cheaper alternative.

Important information about licence management
Unlike RDS CALs, Standard Windows Server CALs are not installed or managed on the server itself. Licensing is based on trust (the "honour system"). Your proof of purchase (invoice and licence key) provides evidence of correct licensing if Microsoft carries out a check.
Frequently asked questions
Do I really need to buy CALs as well as the core licences for the server?
Yes. The core licences for Windows Server 2019 only cover installing the operating system on the hardware. Separate CALs are always required for users or devices to access the server.
What is the difference between this Standard User CAL and an RDS User CAL?
The Standard User CAL allows basic access (files, printing, etc.). However, if a user is to use the terminal server (Remote Desktop Services) to access a central desktop or application, they need an additional "RDS User CAL".
An employee has a PC in the office, a laptop at home and a smartphone. How many CALs do they need?
You only need one Windows Server 2019 User CAL. This one licence covers that employee on all their devices, which makes it the perfect choice.
Where on the server do I install this licence?
Nowhere. Standard CALs simply provide legal proof that you are licensed. They are not stored or activated on the server itself. You must keep your proof of purchase safe in case of an audit.
Can I also access a server running Windows Server 2016 with a 2019 User CAL?
Yes. CALs are backward compatible. A 2019 CAL can be used to access Server 2019, 2016 and older. However, you cannot use it to access a newer server such as 2022.
