Standard Windows Server CALs are not installed on the server as software. Licensing works on a trust basis ("honour system"). Your proof of purchase (invoice and licence key) serves as official evidence of correct licensing in the event of an audit by Microsoft.

We have licensed our Server 2022 by cores. Do we still need CALs?
Yes, definitely. The core licences cover only the installation of the server operating system. For access by each device or user, you absolutely need separate CALs.
A PC in production is used by 3 shifts (3 employees). What do I need?
You need exactly one Windows Server 2022 Device CAL for this one PC. That is cheaper than buying three User CALs.
Does this CAL also cover access via Remote Desktop (terminal server)?
No. This Standard Device CAL covers basic access only (file shares, etc.). If the device is to use the terminal server, it additionally needs an "RDS Device CAL".
Where on the server do I install this licence?
Nowhere. Standard CALs are purely legal proof of licensing. You must keep the invoice and the licence documentation as evidence. There is no technical installation on the server.
Can we also use 2022 CALs to access our older servers (2019, 2016)?
Yes. CALs are backward compatible. A Windows Server 2022 CAL can be used to access Server 2022, 2019, 2016 and earlier versions.
