How does this differ from a User CAL?
A Device CAL is tied to one device, which can then be used by any number of users. A User CAL is tied to one user, who can then access the server from any number of devices. As a rule of thumb: if there are more users than devices, the Device CAL is cheaper.
Can the licences be transferred if we replace a PC?
Yes, RDS Device CALs are not permanently tied to one piece of hardware. In the Remote Desktop Licensing Manager you can revoke the licence from an old, retired device and assign it to a new one.
Can we access Windows Server 2016 with 2008 R2 Device CALs?
No, that is not possible. CALs are not forward compatible. To access Windows Server 2016, you must have RDS 2016 CALs (or newer).
How do I activate the licence?
You activate the licence centrally on your server in "Remote Desktop Licensing Manager", rather than on the client device. Enter the product key you received from us there to increase your pool of available licences.
