What does this CAL cover? Does it also apply to Remote Desktop access?
No. This standard Device CAL only covers basic access (file shares, print services, etc.). To access the terminal server (Remote Desktop Services), you also need an "RDS Device CAL".
One PC in the warehouse is used by 5 employees. What is the cheapest way to license it?
You need exactly one Windows Server 2008 Device CAL for this one PC. This is significantly more cost-efficient than buying five individual User CALs.
Where on the server do I install this licence?
Nowhere. Standard CALs are purely legal proof. You must keep the invoice and the licence documentation as evidence. There is no technical installation or activation on the server.
We still use Windows Server 2003. Do these CALs work for it?
Yes. CALs are backward-compatible. A Windows Server 2008 CAL can be used to access a server running Server 2008 or any older version (e.g. 2003).
Is the licence tied to specific hardware if I replace a PC?
Legally, the licence is tied to a device. If you permanently retire an old PC and replace it with a new one, you can transfer the licence to the new device. Constant reassignment (e.g. every few weeks) is not permitted.
