In this scenario, the Device CAL is perfect. You need exactly 1 "Microsoft Remote Desktop Services 2012 Device CAL", which you assign to this one computer. This is cheaper than buying three individual User CALs.
Can I convert a Device CAL into a User CAL later?
No, it is not possible to convert licences from "Device" to "User" (or vice versa). You should therefore think carefully about the right CAL type before buying, based on whether you have more users or more devices on your network.
How does the system assign a licence to a device?
The assignment is carried out by Remote Desktop Licensing Manager on your Windows Server. When a device that is not yet licensed connects for the first time, the licence server issues it a temporary licence. This is later converted into a permanent RDS Device CAL and tied to the device's hardware ID.
Is the licence valid indefinitely?
Yes, it is a perpetual licence with no time limit. It has no expiry date.
We are planning a server upgrade to Windows Server 2022. Can I keep using these 2012 CALs?
No. The CAL version must always be the same as or newer than the server version. To access a server running Windows Server 2022, you must have RDS 2022 CALs. An RDS 2012 CAL is not compatible with later server versions.
