What is the difference between this standard Device CAL and an RDS Device CAL?
The standard Device CAL only covers basic access to server services such as file sharing and print services. If the device will be used to access a terminal server (Remote Desktop Services), you also need an "RDS Device CAL".
We have 3 employees who share one PC. What do we need?
You need exactly one Windows Server 2012 Device CAL for that one PC. That is cheaper than buying three User CALs.
Where on the server do I enter the licence key?
Nowhere. Standard CALs are purely proof of licensing. You must keep the invoice and the licence documentation as evidence. There is no technical installation or activation on the server.
Can we also use a 2012 Device CAL to access a server running Windows Server 2016?
No. CALs are not forward compatible. To access a server running Server 2016, you need at least a 2016 CAL. However, with a 2012 CAL you can access Server 2012 and older versions such as 2008 R2 (backward compatibility).
What happens if the licensed computer breaks and is replaced?
You can transfer the licence to the new replacement device. The licence is intended for a permanent reassignment, not for temporarily "swapping back and forth" between devices.
