How does the system assign the licence to a device?
Assignment is handled by the Remote Desktop Licensing Manager on your Windows Server. When a device that is not yet licensed connects for the first time, the licence server issues it a temporary licence. This is later converted into a permanent RDS Device CAL and tied to the device's hardware ID.
Are these CALs compatible with Windows Server 2019 or 2022?
No. RDS CALs are not forward compatible. To access Windows Server 2019, you need RDS CALs for version 2019 or later.
Is the licence valid indefinitely?
Yes, it is a perpetual licence that does not expire and has no recurring costs.
How does this differ from a User CAL?
A Device CAL is tied to one device, which can then be used by any number of users. A User CAL is tied to one user, who can then access the server from any number of devices. As a rule of thumb: if there are more users than devices, the Device CAL is cheaper.
