A PC in production is used by 3 shifts (3 employees). What do I need?
You need exactly one Windows Server 2016 Device CAL for that one PC. That is cheaper than buying three User CALs.
Does this CAL also cover access via Remote Desktop (terminal server)?
No. This standard Device CAL only applies to basic access (file sharing, etc.). If the device will use the terminal server, it also needs an "RDS Device CAL".
Where on the server do I install this licence?
Nowhere. Standard CALs are purely proof of licensing. You must keep the invoice and the licence documentation as evidence. There is no technical installation on the server.
Can we use 2016 CALs to access our older servers (2012 R2) as well?
Yes. CALs are backward compatible. A Windows Server 2016 CAL can be used to access Server 2016, 2012 R2 and older, but not newer versions such as Server 2019.
