Unlike RDS CALs, standard Windows Server CALs are not installed or managed through software on the server. Licensing relies on trust (the "honour system"). Your proof of purchase (invoice and licence key) serves as evidence of correct licensing in the event of a review by Microsoft.

What exactly does this CAL allow me to do?
A standard User CAL gives a user basic access to the server. This includes services such as file and folder sharing (File Services), print services (Print Services) and authentication through Active Directory. It does NOT include access to Remote Desktop Services (terminal server).
Do I still need this CAL if I already have RDS CALs?
Yes, definitely. The RDS CAL is an additional licence. Every user who connects via Remote Desktop needs TWO licences: a standard User CAL for basic access AND an RDS User CAL for remote access.
We have 8 employees. How many licences do we need?
You need 8 User CALs. For example, you could buy a pack of 5 and three individual licences to keep licensing simple and potentially save money.
Where on the server do I enter the licence key?
Nowhere. Standard CALs are not registered on the server itself. You must keep the invoice and the licence documents safe as proof of the licences you have bought. This is crucial in case of a Microsoft audit.
Are these CALs compatible with Windows Server 2012 or newer?
No. CALs must always be the same version as the server or a newer one. A 2008 CAL can only be used to access a server running Windows Server 2008 (or older), not a newer version.
